Another few Italeri kits #1308 of the
two seat version MB-326 were made. Assembly was described on the
previous page, do not forget to add some nose weight.
This MB-326 kit would be made as an EMBRAER AT26 Xavante. From the 1970s the Brazil air force (FAB) would need a replacement for their T-33. It would also be nice to finish the AT26 in a scheme of the FAB Alouette aerial demonstration team that flew these jets from 1981 to 1983. It seems that FAB AT26 also had larger wing tip tanks. I had a few spare parts from the Italeri MB-339 kit. Though not perfect, a slice of plastic card was set between the 2 tank halve kit parts from that kit, puttied and sanded in shape.
After basic kit assembly (without landing gears) but with closed lower air brake, the model got a base grey coat.
Revell Aqua acrylic grey was airbrushed. Any smaller errors were corrected with putty and sanding. For the FAB AT26 the colours were about FS36622 off white/ light grey undersurfaces and a camouflage with FS34079 dark green, FS34258 medium green and FS30219 tan brown. First the lower surfaces were airbrushed with Gunze Sangyo Mr.Hobby H311 acrylic. These were masked and than followed the camouflage with respectively Gunze Sangyo Mr.Hobby H309, H313 and H310. The demarcations are vague so hand held papers were used here. The leading edges of the wing and engine air intakes were hand painted aluminium as was the rear lower fuselage at the jet exhaust pipe. The FAB Alouette demo team jets had a yellow fin tip (about RLM 4 painting Gunze H413) and specific markings. The markings were home designed decals and custom laser printed. I used an excellent drawing of Mr. Sampaio from Brazil as guide as well. At the lower surfaces are triangle shapes in yellow and green. If you are interested in a decal print for personal use, contact me (see decals page...). Before any decalling was done, the model got airbrushed a few gloss varnish coats with acrylic Johnson Future thinned 10% with Gunze Sangyo Mr.Hobby levelling thinner for better flow. The Brazil FAB stars came from the Italeri kit decals as came most of the smaller stencilling. As in Brazil the language is Portuguese, the kit decals for the yellow panel with "PISE AQUI" is correct meaning step here. After decalling, the model got its remaining bits like landing gears etc. Inside the cockpit and canopy from tiny plastic bits details were added. The 2 small pitot tubes next to the wind screen are in the kit but this is not indicated in the instructions. The FAB AT26 also has a few extra antennas, a few at the fuselage spine and a few at the lower fuselage. These were made from thin card. The anti-collision lights were tipped with blue and red at tip tanks and spine. A drop of Micro Kristal Kleer suggested the lights. The nose tip and wing tip tank noses were painted light grey. The windscreen was fixed with white glue used to close the tiny gaps. When dried, the white glue edges were painted The canopy was to be set open. So the cockpit was detailed with bits. The kit seat parts are much too small. The seats were replaced by resin seats from the PAVLA set #S72044 "Martin Baker (Fiat G91, MB326, Impala)". The seats were painted black and got a few seat harness straps made from tape. On the seat tops, the ejection curtain handles were added from yellow stretched sprue with some black stripes. The lower strengthening frame part #21A in the canopy needs to be made shorter about 2 mm to fit. The canopy and wind screen edges were drawn black with a permanent marker to suggest the rubber seals. In the wind screen edge (so not the canopy) 3 mirrors made from a piece of aluminium foil were added and some handles inside the canopy. A fuel dump pipe made from sprue was set at the rear lower starboard fuselage. Quite a few small antennas were added made from plastic card below the fuselage (but not the kit parts #19B) and on the fuselage spine aft of the cockpit. The tail got the antennas #7A. At the lower wing at right side a landing light was installed in the AT26. This was suggested with a punched aluminium foil disc using a Waldron set. The model got a semi-matt varnish, using a mix of Johnson Future with a few drops mixed in of Tamiya matting agent "Flat Base" X21 was airbrushed. At the specific AT26 Alouette markings, a gloss varnish coat was set hand painted like on the lower surface triangles. Only some very slight "wash" was added as these Alouettes jets were kept in good condition. The clear cockpit hood (canopy) was set open. That completed this very nice AT26 of the FAB Alouette aerial demonstration team. Brasil .............. [area: 8,515,767 km2 | population: 212 million | capital: Brasilia | GDP USD 7,000 nominal per capita ] From the 1970s the Brazil air force (FAB) would need a replacement for their T-33. The MB326G jet from Aermacchi from Italy was selected. At that time also new EMBRAER Brazillian aircraft manufacturer would benefit from license manufacturing/ assembly. So a contract was signed to in 1969 to built at least 112 FAB designated it as the AT-26 (attack/training type no. 26) and it was to be known as the "Xavante", the name of a Brazilian Indian tribe. It was the first jet to be manufactured in Brazil. The AT26 got a few different systems and the first flight was September 3, 1971 at São José dos Campos. Eventually Embraer produced a total of some 182 EMB-326 jets including jets for Paraguay and for Togo in West Africa. For more information about this air force, look at my F-5 page here... |

Another Italeri MB-326 kit #1308 was made, now in a scheme of the Paraguay air force in South America. Assembly was straight forward but as on many parked MB-326 and AT26 the flaps were seen drooped so these were separated from the kit wing. Any gaps were closed with plastic strips, puttied and sanded smooth.
The lower air brake #9A would be set open as well. It also got the enlarged wing tip tanks, see above... The Paraguay AT26 jets had the same standard camouflage scheme as the Brazil FAB AT26, see notes above... The markings were again home designed decals and custom laser printed. If you are interested in a decal print for personal use, contact me (see decals page...). As the kit stencilling decals for the Brasil scheme may be in Portuguese and not Spanish, I was not sure if these were correct though and they are tiny. But I cut out the Portuguese text PISE AQUI in the yellow wing root marking for the Paraguay AT26. The undercarriages and smaller kit parts including the various antennas were installed. There are just a few antennas seen on the Paraguay jets like kit parts #7A. At the lower wing at right side a landing light was installed in the AT26. This was suggested with a punched aluminium foil disc using a Waldron set (not seen yet in the photo above). A final semi-mat varnish coat was airbrushed to get an even sheen. The detailed cockpit hood was detailed inside and set open and that completed this model. PARAGUAY [area: 406,800 sq.km | population: 7,3 million | capital: Asuncion | GDP USD 6,200 per capita nominal ] Paraguay acquired for the "Fuerza Aerea Paraguay" 10 Brazilian AT26 jets with first delivery October 1979 with an additional 10th jet in Sept 1980. Codes were 1001 to 1010. They were flown by no. 1 Escadron de Caza "Guarani" until probably 2007. It seems that many years later end 2010 some 4 AT26 went back to Brazil in exchange for 3 EMB-312 Tucano's supplied to Paraguay. For more information about this air force, look at my T-33 page here... |

Another EMBRAER AT26 was made
in a scheme of the Togo
air force bthat also acquired some of these jets. The kit was made
exactly as described above for the Paraguay model including the
camouflage scheme. But the flaps were kept as per kit "up" and the
canopy was now set closed. So the cockpit got the (inaccurate) kit
seats with just some harness straps and the curtain handles on top. The Togolese markings were again home designed decals and custom laser printed. If you are interested in a decal print for personal use, contact me (see decals page...). Note that the Togo roundels also were printed with separate white base decals as they are very thin. It was not sure about the stencilling decals, I used a mix from various Italeri kits. Again at the lower wing at right side a landing light was installed in the AT26 using a punched foil disk with a Waldron set. There are just a few antennas seen on the Togolese jets like kit parts #7A. The lower air brake was set open. The main big clear cockpit hood was to be set closed and only some details in the cockpit were added including the kit seats after they got the curtain handles. The tiny canopy-fuselage gaps were filled with white glue. When dried, these were painted in the surrounding camo colours. A semi-mat varnsih was airbrushed, shield off the clear canopy. TOGO [ area: 56,785 sq.km | population: 8,7 million | capital: Lome | GDP USD 700 per capita nominal ] Togo acquired some 7 EMB326CG jets from 1976. They had codes 5V-MAO/ P/Q/W/Y/ X. For more information about this air force, look at my Alpha jet page here... Nice additions in the World Air Forces Collection.... | |
