This model was made as a Do-28 D-2 flown by the Benin Air Force. ("Force Armees Populair du Benin" / current: "Force Aerienne Populair du Benin"). The cabin doors were to be set open. The overall plane had a white colour with a cheat line. Airbrushed was a base white colour with Revell Aqua acrylic 04 white and than a ghloss white coat with Gunze Sango H1 acrylic paint. No black de-icing boots on the wing were seen. At the time, the Benin Air Force had the old style roundels. The markings were home designed with a graphics program looking at a few photos and the decals were than laser printed. If you are interested in a print, look at decals sheet AIPD-52 on this page... A few drawn pencil lines suggest panels and some wash was applied in control surfaces. After decalling, the model got the flap hinges from scrap, door entry step, wind screen wipers and static dischargers. The long wire antennas were made from Prym elastic wire. The cabin doors were set open and items added like pitot, wind screen wipers and entry step. Many static dischargers were added from thin fishing line. The anti-collision lights on the wing tips were painted and on fuselage and tail made from clear red plastic bits. A few gloss varnish coats were airbrushed to get an even sheen and to protect the decals with Johnson Future/Pledge. BENIN , old: [ area: 115,000 sq.km | population: 13,8 million | capital: Porto Novo | GDP per capita nominal 1,400 USD ] Benin was a French colony known as Dahomey but became independent in 1960. The small air force "Force Armees Populair du Benin" flew with a C-47, F-27, Broussards as well as Commander transports and Alouette II, all operated from Cotonou. Under a marxist rule, with a new green disk roundel with small red star also AN-2, AN-26 were flown from 1978 until 1988. Two Dornier Do-28D-2 were flown by the Benin Air Force from 1985 until probably 1994, photos show the green disk roundel. They had codes TY-AAK and TY-AAL. Fighter aircraft were never flown by the Benin Air Force. Current aircraft of the "Force Aerienne Populair du Benin" are a few ex-Belgian A-109 helicopters, a pair of BAe 748 and Twin Otter sporting the later style colourful roundel. Another model was made as a Do-28 D-2 flown by the Croatia Air Force. Quite straight out of the box. The cabin doors were set close. The interior was done as per kit and airbrushed medium grey, blue cushions and cockpit seats got some straps. Add the pair of pilot control wheels. Join the wing halve parts and prepare stabilizer for airbrushing. Same with the nacelles that need also setting the main wheels. The overall plane had a white colour with a half cheat line. Airbrushed was a base white colour with Revell Aqua acrylic 04 white and than a fine gloss white coat with Gunze Sango H1 acrylic paint. I did this before joining the fuselage halves to avoid masking all those windows. Also a few holes were drilled for a later metal spar to get stronger fuselage-wing halves joints. Windows were set in the fuselage halves and fixed with thin glue and transparant tape on the inside. The fuselage halves were joined with interior inside. Unfortunately, quite some putty sanding was needed at the joints including filling up some shrinkage... The cockpit window was set and some Microscale Kristal Kleer set to close gaps. Set stabilizers also at 90 degrees and the nacelles. Another round of airbrushing the white was needed so the windows were masked. Polishing was done when paint had dried. The wing halves had been assembled and airbrushed. These were now set with inside a metal rod. Wing and stabilizers were set. The black de-icing boots and anti-glare panel were masked and airbrushed mat black. At the time, the Croatia aircraft had only the flag on the tail. The markings were home designed with a graphics program looking at a few photos and the decals were than laser printed. If you are interested in a print, look at decals sheet AIPD-53 on this page... The decals were set on the glossy model without any issue. After decalling, the model got the missing flap hinges from scrap, door entry steps, wind screen wipers and static dischargers as described above for the Benin model. A single long antenna wire was also set. A few gloss varnish coats were airbrushed to get an even sheen and to protect the decals with Johnson Future/Pledge. Shield off the clear parts. CROATIA [ area: 56,594 sq.km | population: 4,1 million | capital: Zagreb | GDP USD 15,000 nominal per capita] Croatia was part after the Second World War of Tito's communist Yugoslav Federation. It became independent June 1991. For more information about the Croatia Air Force, check out the MiG-21 page here.... Dornier Do-28D-2, Croatia Air Force. Ex-West German aircraft coded 59+03. Bought second hand in 1993 by Croatia Government soon after independence. Arrived after overhaul March 1994 under fake code 9A-NDH and quickly re-registered 9A-ISC. Flew with the Croatia Independent Aviation Corps and later Air Force until 1999. | |
Another 1/72 model was made as a Do-28 D-2 flown by the Serbia Air Force. In almost similar way as described for the Croatia model above. Its paint scheme is overall white with black de-icing leading edges and a black anti-glare panel. The red details were after masking airbrushed Revell Rot 330 aqua acrylic. The decals were again home designed and laser printed. If you are interested in a print, look at decals sheet AIPD-53 on this page... Different schemes were seen. I opted for the scheme with the roundels. In the lower view, the scrap flap hinges are also seen as is the black lower area on the nacelles. The smaller steps are still to be added. From tail to spine a long wire antenna was set and a small blade antenna as well. SERBIA [ area 77,500 sq.km excl. 11,000 sq.km Kosovo| capital Belgrade | population 7 million excl. 2 million Kosovo | GDP per capita EUR 6,000 nominal ] Serbia is located in the Balkan. A pair of Dornier Do-28 D-2 planes were probably flown in period 2006-2023. For more information about this air force, look at the MiG-21 page here... Do-28D-2, Serbia air force, c/n 4304 coded 70501. It appears 2 Dornier D-28 were acquired in 2006, the other being c/n 4313 (70502). Flown from Batajnica. ... in a scenery...
