.... continued from page 2.... Another 1/72 HobbyBoss F-84G Thunderjet was made. It was described earlier on page 1.... Assembly is very straight forward and although
there are not a lot of parts, the model looks fine. Now in what scheme
would it be made? I had an old CARPENA set #72/27 that offers several scheme' decals: -a- F-84G Thunderjet of Portugal DRAGOES aerobatic team 1954-1960; -b- F-84G Thunderjet France PATROUILLE DE FRANCE aerobatic team 1953; -c- F-84G Thunderjet Turkey TURK HAVA KUYVETLERI aerobatic team. (There are also decals on the sheet for F-84F
Thunderstreak of the USAF at RAF Bentwaters and RF-84F Thunderflash of
the France Armee de l' Air). The decals are fine but vulnerable so be careful when setting these. I opted for scheme -c- for the Turkish
aerobatic display team and after looking at internet sources I think it
was of the "Akitimi Milli" team in 1954 (later followed by the Akrep
team). The Hobbyboss kit assembly is very easy and the model looks fine. Just some minor putty and sanding was needed. Do not yet install the smaller detail parts like gears. I could not see which type of lower air brake was used so picked a part. After main assembly and surface polishing,
a grey base coat was added with Revell Aqua 75 steingrau. When dried followed by a few coats of Johnson
Future to ensure that a very smooth finish is there. For the metal The lower areas are red though I could not
clearly see where the borders between red and metal are. I could not
find a photo from above but trusted an aviation artist painting found on a Turkish
aviation website showing this jet. Masking was done and for the red Gunze Sangyo
Mr.Hobby H3 thinned acrylic paint airbrushed. There are also a few
olive drab areas, these were masked and airbrushed thinned Revell Aqua 50 acrylic. The spine was airbrushed after masking olive green. I think the area was a bit less wide than usual. Decalling with the Carpena decals for scheme
-c- was OK but I think that 2 rectangular old style Turkis
national insignia are missing that should be on the lower wing outher
surfaces. These were simply made with spare white decal and spare red
decals. The colour of the gear bays is unclear but
usual at the time was dark interior green. After painting the landing
gear, installment was easy. Cockpit was painted green and the seat got
some straps and the instrument panels drybrushed and painted. All was
installed. The installment of the landing gears was very easy. The windscreen frames were painted and the canopy framing was a combination of painting and decals strips. Finally a gloss coat of varnish was airbrushed
and the canopy set. That completed a neat model. It is surprisingly
bigger than the F-86 Sabre as the Thunderjet has an unswept wing.
TURKEY [area: 783,300 km2 | population: 83,6 million | capital: Ankara | GDP 7,500 USD nominal per capita ] The Turkish Air Force ("Türk Hava Kuvvetleri") was established in 1911. After 1945, Turkey became a NATO member and has large armed forces. As many NATO countries, during the Cold War large quantities of particularly American aircraft were obtained. This included from 1952 the Thunderjet of which eventually some 470 jets were operated.F-84G Thunderjet, serial 51-10921, coded 921, TURK HAVA KUYVETLERI aerobatic team "Akitimi Milli", 1954. It is unclear if it was based at Diyarbakir (now Pirinclik air base) in South East Turkey. Another nice 1/72 F-84G Thunderjet is now in the World Air Forces collection. |
