![]() ... back to page 1... Another few 1/72 kits from Special Hobby were made as the kits has some very nice decals for smaller air forces. Building this kit is described on page 1. The second kit was made in markings for scheme -D-: Do-27A-1 Israel camo with also some yellow. The colours as indicated in the instructions were airbrushed with Gunze Sangyo Mr.Hobby acrylics. Lower surfaces a mix of light grey and aluminium. Camo olive Gunze Sangyo H340, Grey H301 and yellow H4. Masking is needed for the yellow panels. ![]() The yellow was airbrushed. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now the model got a gloss varnish using my usual technique with Johnson Future/ Pledge acrylic thinned with 5% Gunze Levelling thinner. ![]() The decals were set from the kit. The smaller details were set and painted as per instructions. A long antenna wire was added made from Prym elastic wire. ![]() A neat small Israeli Do-27A-1 is now in the collection. ![]() ISRAEL ![]() ![]() ![]() [ area: 21,000 sq.km | population: 10 million | capital: Jerusalem | GDP 54,000 USD nominal ] The Israeli air force (IAF) begun operating the Do-27 in October 1964 when the first 10 examples entered service with the no.100 "Flying Camel" Squadron at Sde-Dov. After the 1967 Six Days War, the Do-27 fleet grew to 35 planes. Nicknamed "Dror" (sparrow), the Do-27 was routinely used in utility transport. During the wars in the region some were used for spotting and lost or shot down. The type was finally retired from the IAF in 1981 and most aircraft were sold abroad. Another Special Hobby Do-27 kit was made, now in scheme -F-: Portugal air force. Colour airbrushed were as indicated in Gunze Sangyo Mr.Hobby acrylics with again lower surfaces a mix of light grey and aluminium. Camo olive Gunze Sangyo H340, Grey H301. ![]() The kit was completed as per instructions. The propeller hub needs a painted spiral. A long vertical sprite antenna was added from stretched sprue. On the sides are also a few wires antennas. ![]() Portugal ![]() ![]() ![]() [ area: 92,212 sq.km | Population 10,6 million | capital: Lisbon | nominal GDP 30,000 USD per capita ][2025 data] During the 1960s Portugal acquired no less than 146 Do-27 aircraft (40 new and 106 second hand provided by the West German Luftwaffe). The Dorniers were widely used in the Portuguese colonies during the various local colonial wars in Angola, Mocambique and Guinea Bissau. The Do-27 was not only a light transport but was also used for aerial reconnaissance and sporadically even for air support firing unguided rockets mounted under the wings. The colonies became independent in the 1970s and many aircraft put out of service. Some 12 remaining Do-27 aircraft were operated at Portugal Tancos air base BA-3 in the 1980s.
