AZ Model issued a 1/72 scale Chipmunk kit in 2017 and the kit has several releases with different decals. There are about 40 parts. The instructions are a bit unclear as the different kit release parts are not clearly shown.Kit release #AZ7649 has decals for a - Israeli Chipmunk (1948...) - Sri Lanka (Ceylon) Chipmunk 1972... - Royal Saudi Air Force as seen in the Riyad museum The decals are very thin, take care when applying. The kit is short run with some thick sprue gates. Parts are seen here... This kit was made in the scheme of the Sri Lanka air force as per kit. Assembly was done rather straight out of the box of this kit. Plastic is a bit soft, this being a short run kit. The seats got some straps.
Sanding was needed at the wing fuselage joints and a some puttying.
The ailerons edges were sawed in with a razor saw for added realism. It was unclear if the anti-spin strakes at the rear fuselage were installed so these were not used. A base grey coat was airbrushed with my favourite Revell Aqua 75 Steingrau acrylic paint for the base/ primer coat. The basic scheme is white with bright red panels. A first mat white coat was airbrushed with Revell Aqua 05 weiss acrylic paint, followed by 04 gloss white.
Masking was carefully done and the red panels airbrushed with Revell 330 rot Aqua.
With the result including black anti-glare panel....
Decalling was done, take care as the kit decals are very thin.
Some small aileron control rods were added on the lower wing. The model was not weathered, training Chipmunks were kept in well condition. After decalling, a final airbrushed coat of Johnson Future / Pledge protected the decals and provides a nice gloss sheen. The canopy frames were hand painted white and the rear hood set slided open. The propeller was painted and installed with a drop of white glue to fix it. SRI LANKA [area: 65,610 sq.km | population: 22,3 million | capital: Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte | GDP nominal < 3,000 USD per capita ] The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) (Sinhalese: ශ්රි ලංකා ගුවන් හමුදාව; Shri Lanka Guwan Hamudawa) was founded in 1951 as the Royal Ceylon Air Force (RCyAF) with the assistance of the Royal Air Force (RAF). It started with many British aircraft types like Chipmunk trainers. For more information, look at the Jet Provost page here...
