Literature
Various methods can be found in very good books: Recommended Reading (based on experience)....

Modern Transport Aircraft:
  • Synthesis of Subsonic Airplane Design, Torenbeek, Delft University Press, 1981-1990-2010!
  • the bible of aircraft design, with numerous good preliminary design methods, data and a very comprehensive overview of really good methods. Recommended and proven in real design. Was written by my professor in Delft!

  • Fundamentals of Flight, Richard Shevell, Douglas designer, Prentice Hall, 1983-1989, ISBN 0-13-339060-8
  • a book I found to contain very usefull data, especially on buffet conditions and Mach drag rise, airfoil sections and effects of Sweepback.

  • Airframe structural design, Michael Niu, Lockheed, Conmilit press, 1992, ISBN 962-7128-04-X
  • a very good book on design of aircraft structures with numerous examples. Promises to be a bible in this area.

  • Design for Air Combat, Ray Whitford, Jane's, 1987, ISBN 0-7106-0426-2
  • a dedicated book on this usually classified subject; also: revised edition based on articles Air International series.

  • Aerodynamic Design Of Transport Aircraft - E. Obert , 2009
  • a very good book with the latest insights on modern aerodynamic aircraft design in real aircraft. Was written by my boss at Fokker Aircraft!
    ISBN-10: 1586039709

  • Advanced aircraft design, conceptual design, analysis and optimization of subsonic civil airplanes; Torenbeek. (my professor in Delft!); Published by Wiley and Sons, 2013. ISBN: 9781119969303
Smaller aircraft (home built etc):
  • Design of the aeroplane, Darrol Stinton, BSP books, 1983,
a book with very practical simple methods, but please note it is only applicable for simple designs.

Helicopter design:
  • Rotary wings aerodynamics, Stepniewsky and Keys, Dover publishers, 1984, ISBN 0-486-64647-5
  • a very good book on actual rotor design for a helicopter.

About aircraft designers....
  • Ed Heinemann, Combat aircraft designer, 1980, ISBN 0-87021-797-6,
  • the incredible story that was an inspiration for me and should be for any aircraft designer freak in aerospace design.
