F-5 "Freedom Fighters" in 1/72 scale : kit review & building report |
|
| Dutch Air force F-5's were used as the "multi purpose" ground attack aircraft from 1970 up to 1985. Later, they were replaced with the F-16. |
|
| The F-5A was
available years ago only from Airfix or other Far East brands. However,
these kit were very inaccurate. Fortunately, ESCI came with two kit, for
a F-5A single seater and the F-5B double seater/trainer.
The ESCI kits, no 9032, were issued in 1988. They are very good, enabling you also to make the Dutch NF-5 version, this version have a different nose strut and two large Flare pods on the rear of the tail section. Also, you get the decals for a Dutch AF aircraft. The following was done on the models
of both the NF-5A and the NF-5B:
For the NF-5B two seater, I also made the canopy mechanism between the two canopies. The kits result in a very good representation
of the real thing.
The NF-5A was finished in a newer grey scheme II with FS 36118, FS 36270 and FS3 6375 for the lower surfaces. This is similar to the F-16 scheme.. The NF-5A aircraft is "K-3045" of
315 squadron.
